Temperatures range from the mid-70s in winter to the mid-80s in summer. Annual rainfall averages 45 inches and trade winds are nearly constant. Low humidity year-round. All the signs pointed towards Antigua in the Leeward Islands. The island had warm, steady winds, a complex coastline of safe harbors, and a protective, nearly unbroken wall of coral reef. It would make a perfect place to hide a fleet. And so in 1784 the legendary Admiral Horatio Nelson sailed to Antigua, in the British West Indies and established Great Britain's most important Caribbean (Lesser Antilles) base. Little did he know that over 200 years later the same unique characteristics that attracted the Royal Navy would transform Antigua and Barbuda in one of the Caribbean's premier tourist destinations. Its highest point is Boggy Peak (1319 ft.), located in the southwestern corner of the island. Barbuda, a flat coral island with an area of only 68 square miles, lies approximately 30 miles due north. Sandals Says…News from the Caribbean's Leading Luxury Included™ Resorts Sandals Resorts’ “ Promotions” are available at all 12 resort locations in Jamaica, Antigua, St. Lucia, and The Bahamas. The threat of any industrial action by pilots no longer hangs over the heads of LIAT’s management following the intervention of Antigua’s Tourism Minister Harold Lovell and General of Grenada Allied Workers Union Senator Chester Humphreys. The two sides of the airline’s latest employee conflict came together for a meeting in Antigua this week. At the end of the lengthy meeting, it was agreed that the issues in dispute would be dealt with over the next 28 days during which period there will be no industrial action by the Pilot’s Association or any other action, which may alter the normal operations of the company.
The parties have agreed, according to a press release, “not to ventilate their differences through media releases or other public statements and the company shall address all matters concerning the current dispute directly to the chairman or secretary of Association.” It was also agreed that they would submit to binding arbitration should any dispute arise from negotiations for a new collective agreement that is not settled by March 31st, 2009. Earlier in the week, the Island’s Attorney-General Justin Simon wrote to the chairman of the airline’s pilots association, Captain Michael Blackburn, asking him not to take any industrial action, pending a review of the situation.
Last month, Blackburn threatened to withhold pilots’ services if their call for premium pay for work done on public holidays was not honoured by the airline’s management. The LIALPA chairman contended that pilots were victims of discrimination because they do not receive premium pay (time and a half) for working on public holidays.LIAT’s Chief Executive Officer Mark Darby said that throughout the Caribbean, premium pay does not apply to airline crew. Darby said that a 1989 ministerial order exempted all regional airlines from paying premium pay to pilots on public holidays.
