Temperatures range from the mid-70s in winter to the mid-80s in summer. Annual rainfall averages 45 inches and trade winds are nearly constant. Low humidity year-round. All the signs pointed towards Antigua in the Leeward Islands. The island had warm, steady winds, a complex coastline of safe harbors, and a protective, nearly unbroken wall of coral reef. It would make a perfect place to hide a fleet. And so in 1784 the legendary Admiral Horatio Nelson sailed to Antigua, in the British West Indies and established Great Britain's most important Caribbean (Lesser Antilles) base. Little did he know that over 200 years later the same unique characteristics that attracted the Royal Navy would transform Antigua and Barbuda in one of the Caribbean's premier tourist destinations. A beach for every day of the year
Silken sands. Captivating coves. Secluded shores. There are 365 beaches in Antigua, most located on the island's calm, protected Caribbean side. Tucked along the bays of the island, Antigua's beaches are some of the most pristine in the Caribbean. Warm, steady trade winds, a complex coastline of safe harbors, and a protective, nearly unbroken wall of coral reef make Antigua a delight for sun worshippers and watersports enthusiasts. Antigua's weather is ideal with less than 45 inches of rainfall each year, making it the sunniest of the Eastern Caribbean Islands (Lesser Antilles). Antigua (pronounced An-tee'ga) and Barbuda are located in the middle of the Leeward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean, roughly 17 degrees north of the equator. To the south are the islands of Montserrat and Guadeloupe, and to the north and west are Nevis, St. Kitts, St. Barts, and St. Martin. For those looking for some action at the tables, Antigua has a few casinos that fit the bill. Dickenson Bay and Runaway Bay are located on the northwestern coast and are the place to go if you want the full beach experience. Galley Bay attracts surfers during the winter. The four crescent beaches at Hawksbill are also highly regarded. The perfect end to any day awaits with spectacular sunsets from Fort Berkeley and Shirley Heights, where you can see far out over English Harbour. A visit to Nelson's Dockyard at English Harbour is a delightful experience with its mix of shops, restaurants and English taverns. Antigua, the largest of the English-speaking Leeward Islands, is about 14 miles long and 11 miles wide, encompassing 108 square miles. Its highest point is Boggy Peak (1319 ft.), located in the southwestern corner of the island. Barbuda, a flat coral island with an area of only 68 square miles, lies approximately 30 miles due north. The nation also includes the tiny (0.6 square mile) uninhabited island of Redonda, now a nature preserve. The current population for the nation is approximately 68,000 and its capital is St. John's on Antigua. Baking Bread On The Island Of Antigua - What happens when you mix French bread, a Home Depot executive and a Canadian architect together on a Caribbean island? In Antigua, this has turned out to be a winning combination for Douglas McVicars and partner Dianne White, who've just opened their fifth link in a chain of bread and pastry shops. |
