Anegada British Virgin Islands / Leeward Islands Vacation Packages

Anegada is the only coral island in the British Virgin Island chain (the rest are all volcanic).

Anegada was named by the Spanish and it's name means "Drowned Land". A popular haunt with pirates in years gone by with over 200 wrecks surrounding the island; and before then there is evidence of aboriginal / Arawak settlements.

The Caribbean island is eleven miles long and just three miles wide with the highest point on Anegada only 28 feet above sea level. The island is surrounded by an 18 mile long Horseshoe Reef which is popular with divers and for snorkeling.

Anegada is the northernmost of the British Virgin Islands (Lesser Antilles), a group of islands which form part of the archipelago of the Virgin Islands. It lies approximately 15 miles north of Virgin Gorda. Anegada is the only inhabited one of the British Virgin Islands formed from coral and limestone,[1] rather than being of volcanic origin. While the other islands are mountainous, Anegada British West Indies is flat and low. Its highest point is only about 28 feet above sea level, earning it the name which translates as “the drowned land.”

Iguana on the Rocks
Residents of Anegada work to save the native rock iguana from extinction.

The primary business on Anegada is tourism. On a typical day during the tourist season, the island will have an additional 200 or so visitors. Commercial fishing is also a substantial business on Anegada, with local fishermen providing the majority of the fresh fish and lobster catch for the rest of the British Virgin Islands.

Anegada: Lush Reefs, Luscious Lobster
Anegada is the hot blonde, the beachy stepsister to the rest of the BVIs tall, coolly lush-green volcanic isles. Its the only island in the chain that was born slowly of coral instead of volcanic violence.

The remoteness of Anegada is one of its main attractions. Most visitors come to Anegada to relax, spending their days on Anegada's beautiful but relatively deserted north shore beaches. Its miles of south shore flats has a large population of bonefish, making Anegada a popular destination for flyfishing.

The interior of the island has many saltwater ponds, mangrove swaps and mud flaps which are home to many exotic birds. There are also natural fresh water springs. The main town is called the Settlement, located in the east end of Anegada island.

Access to the island is via the small Auguste George Airport (NGD), thrice-weekly ferries, and private boat.

Cow Wreck Beach Resort

Hundreds of ships have met their fate on the reefs of Anegada, and for years after one particular 19th-century wreck, cow bones washed ashore on the island's northwest coast. This tragedy not only led to maritime laws forbidding cattle from ever again serving as crew aboard merchant ships, but it also bestowed a quirky name on the local bay.

Cow Wreck Beach Resort comprises three self-catering cottages and an inviting beach bar/restaurant astride one of Anegada's endless powdery-white strands. Accommodations sit just 25 feet from the sand, and good snorkeling begins just offshore. Grass beds dotted with conch and patrolled by bonefish give way to scattered coral heads crowded with sea life -- all in just 5 feet of water. Keep making your way toward the drop-off marked by dark patches and deep blue, and you'll find huge coral bommies undercut with ledges rising from the sandy bottom 30 feet below. One-bedroom cottages are $200 year-round; one-bedrooms with air conditioning, $250; and two-bedrooms, $300.
