Antigua Nightlife & Attractions

Antigua has some of the best steel bands in the Caribbean. Most nightlife revolves around the hotels. If you want to roam Antigua at night looking for that hot local club, arrange to have a taxi pick you up, so you're not stranded in the wilds somewhere.

The main sights not to miss in Antigua (not necessarily the major tourist attractions) are St John's, Sandy Cove in Nonsuch Bay, Nelson's Dockyard at English Harbour, the spectacular views from Shirley Heights, Falmouth Harbour, the wild and remote Devil's Bridge on the north eastern point and Half Moon Bay (possibly the most beautiful of all Antigua's beaches). Cruise ship passengers will have a wide variety of excursions to choose from, those staying in Antigua should definitely rent a car and explore the more remote areas.

Steel bands, limbo dancers, calypso singers, folkloric groups -- there's always something happening by night on Antigua. Your hotel can probably tell you where to go on any given night. The following clubs are reliable hot spots.

The best place to be on island on Sunday afternoon is Shirley Heights Lookout at Shirley Heights (tel. 268/460-1785). Beginning at 4pm, a barbecue is offered here, followed by a reggae and steel-pan band for dancing later in the evening. Celebrities such as Chuck Norris and Whitney Houston have joined in the fun. Many locals arrive on any late afternoon, grab a sundowner, and head for the patio in the rear to watch Antigua's most spectacular sunset. Sunday's EC$15 (US$5.55/£3) cover charge includes the first drink.

18 Carat, Lower Church St., St. John's (tel. 268/562-1858), opened in 2002 and rose instantly to the status of most popular and sought-after dance club and night bar on the island. Expect a cover charge, ranging from EC$10 to EC$20 (US$3.70-US$7.40/£2-£4) per person, an indoor-outdoor format that's open to a view of the night air of downtown St. John's, and a barrage of music that includes lots of reggae and soca. It's open Friday to Sunday 8pm to 1am.

Stop in at the Bay House, Tradewinds Hotel, Marble Hill (tel. 268/462-1223) for the island's best mix of singles (both straight and -- to a much lesser degree -- gay). Lashings, Runaway Bay (tel. 268/462-4438), is the hangout of local cricketers, and always attracts a fun-loving bevy of patrons who dance the night away after ordering Tex-Mex fare.

Live nightly entertainment takes place right on the beach at Millers by the Sea, at Runaway Beach (tel. 268/462-9414). Its happy hour is the best in town.

At English Harbour, action centers on the Admiral's Inn (tel. 268/460-1027), a barefoot-friendly kind of place. You can always play a game of darts and there's live music Thursday and Saturday nights, usually a local 14-piece steel band. Try one of Norman's daiquiris (the island's best), and ask the bartender about the famous guests he's served, from Richard Burton to Prince Charles. Another much-frequented English Harbour watering hole is The Life Bar, Nelson's Dockyard, VHF #68 (tel. 268/562-2353), the most popular spot for visitors arriving aboard yachts. We like its nautical atmosphere and the wooden pier that the action centers on. On occasion, it's West Indian party time, with live groups performing. The most authentic British pub at Nelson's Dockyard is Mainbrace (tel. 268/460-1058), with darts, of course, and fish and chips, and on some nights live jazz. The pub is part of The Copper and Lumber Store Hotel.

In With the In Crowd on Antigua
During Sailing Week, one of the world's most popular regattas, Antigua's bars and restaurants are awash with the party-hearty yeomen of the international yachting set.

But with historic ambience, fine resorts and myriad beaches, there's much more to the island than sundowners and topsiders.

Antigua Cricket

One cannot fully grasp the culture of Antigua without considering the island's fierce devotion to cricket. The sport is played everywhere and at any time, though official matches tend to be held on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The cricket season lasts from January to July and is interspersed during most seasons with regional and international matches. The Antigua Recreation Ground, which became in 1980-81 the 52nd international test venue, is one of the most exciting places in the world to observe a match. The local crowd is extremely devoted to the game, and the facilities themselves are outstanding.
