Nevis Leeward Islands

The Nevis climate is tropical with little variation, tempered from December through February by the steady, mild north-easterly breezes called the alizés or trade winds, followed by a slightly hotter and somewhat rainier season from May to November. Nevis lies in the track of tropical hurricanes, developing between August and October. This period has the heaviest rainfall of the year. In 1999, Nevis was hit by hurricane Lenny, the most recent hurricane to cause heavy damage to the island's infrastructure.

There's something about this small, sombrero-shaped island that grabs you. The charm and tranquility takes you back to a time when things were simpler, when life was more peaceful, when stress was just a word, not a way of life.

This 36-square-mile island lies near the top of the Lesser Antilles archipelago, about 200 miles south of Puerto Rico, and just west of Antigua. This island jewel is approximately 7 miles long and 5 miles wide, with natural vegetation that is unparalleled.

Let the Sun Shine and the Bees Sting
In 1991, Llewellyn "Sunshine" Caines dragged a couple of coolers and a barbecue onto Nevis' Pinney’s Beach and started selling cold beer and grilled fish to day-trippers, anchored yachties and the workers finishing up the Four Seasons Nevis. Since then, five hurricanes have tried to blow him off the sand.

    Nevis: West Indian Original
Blissfully removed from the prevailing commercial culture, Nevis is caught between the 18th century and whatever the future may hold.

Green and serene, Nevis is truly one of the remaining unspoilt places and proudly carries the name, "Queen of the Caribees." From the top of the 3,232-foot Nevis Peak to the depths of the clear waters offshore, there is a world of flora and fauna to be explored. In the hills, the comical green vervet monkeys chatter and scamper; in the sea, the whales cruise by. Stroll around and see the architecture of eras gone by: churches, windmills, and refurbished Great Houses.
Whale watching is a possibility on Nevis at two main times during the year. The first is during March and April, when migrating whales pass through the general area heading south, and the second is late October through early December when they are heading north.  There are over 30 species of Cetaceans found in the Caribbean, but most are difficult to spot.  The whales that can sometimes be seen in this part of the Leeward Islands include Humpback, Sperm, Pygmy Sperm, and Pilot whales, as well as several different kinds of dolphins.

In general however, it is worth saying that you are much more likely to see turtles and dolphins off of Nevis, than you are to see whales.

Its 10,000 residents are friendly and helpful, ready to make new friends and welcome back regular visitors. The genuine charm and hospitality radiate into the unspoken, "Welcome," "Be my guest," and "Do come again."

Nevis is special, a place that will seduce you, and tug at your heart strings after you leave.

Like they say on Nevis: "You're only a stranger here once."

Federated By Ferries – Part II ~ Nevis – Head In The Clouds ~ by Deb Andrews - Nevis is more than sleepy, its moody! Perhaps its to do with the dominating mountain, the shapeshifting cloud around the peak, changeless and changing, the light never the same. Walking up the main street at 8.15 on a Wednesday, through the banking sector, past First Caribbean (Barclays Bank and CIBC), Scotia Bank, Royal Bank of Trinidad and Tobago, and the Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis, and then the ferry dock, the various Ministries of Government and the Cotton Ginnery; I saw two people, and never more than one car on the road at a time.  Between 8.30 and 9, things did liven up, and people started to arrive opening up offices and shops.
