Caneel Bay Cruz Bay Maho Bay Virgin Islands National Park

Saint John is an island in the Caribbean Sea and a constituent district of the United States Virgin Islands (USVI), an unincorporated territory of the United States. It is the smallest of the three main islands: Saint John, Saint Thomas, and Saint Croix. St. John is located in the Caribbean Sea about 4 miles east of Saint Thomas, the location of the territory's capital, Charlotte Amalie, and 4 miles south and west of Tortola, part of the British Virgin Islands. It is 50.8 km² (19.61 sq mi) in area and has a population of 4,197 (2000 census) [1]. Because there are no airports on St. John, there is only access to the island by boat. Ferry service runs hourly from St. Thomas and daily from Tortola; regular ferries are also available from Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, and Anegada.

Honey, I Sunk The Kids
The 225-yard snorkel trail in the clear, calm, warm waters of St. John's Trunk Bay, works a 10- to 30-feet-deep course across the bay. A dozen blue-and-white underwater signs mark the trail and explain what there is to see. Parrotfish, blue tangs, sergeant majors and other fish dance around the coral while rays nestle on the sandy bottom.
Camp Cousteau
Join Jean-Michel Cousteau's Ocean Futures Society and St. John's Maho Bay Camps for a week-long adventure vacation.
High On St. John
Overlooking the U.S. Virgin Islands National Park and Pillsbury Sound, the villa is awash in pastel colors on the inside and out, as well as gingerbread trim and gardens overflowing with bird-of-paradise, heliconia, lobster claw and hundreds of orchids.
From Bays to Small Cays
There's good reason why so many people head to St. John for their baptism into the society of snorkelers -- it's just so darn easy to drop in here. The island's best beaches rim the north shore and, bay after bay, the waters are typically calm, warm and inviting

Cruz Bay on the western coast of the island serves as the principal port of St. John. From there, a ferry runs throughout the day to and from Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook in St. Thomas. It is also home to (among other things) car rental locations, several restaurants, a supermarket, and several shopping centers, the major three of which are named Mongoose Junction, the Marketplace, and Wharfside Village. Coral Bay on the eastern side of the island is the other (smaller) town on St. John which offers some of the same amenities.

St. John has about 40 sun-drenched and sandy Caribbean beaches, almost all of which fall under the jurisdiction of the Virgin Islands National Park. Favorites among locals and tourists alike consist of Trunk Bay, Francis Bay, Salt Pond and Hawksnest Bay.

Trunk Bay is the best beach on the island due, in part, to the innovative snorkel trail, a 225-yard, underwater tour through the coral and marine life marked by informative plaques. Hawksnest Bay beach is slightly smaller and less crowded than Trunk Bay's, but they are both surrounded by beautifully clear water, palm trees with changing facilities, snack bars and picnic tables. Cinnamon Bay has a fabulous beach with good snorkeling, watersport facilities, a restaurant and views of the nearby islands. Maho Bay, Francis Bay and Leinster Bay are also lovely spots on the north shore. If you're feeling adventurous, you can follow the Leinster Bay Trail to Watermelon Cay, where you can swim and see some great coral. Francis Bay is the only one without facilities. Caneel Bay has seven nice beaches but most of them belong to the waterfront hotels. Salt Pond beach is also excellent for snorkeling and hiking.
