Saint Thomas is an island in the Caribbean Sea, a county and constituent district of the United States Virgin Islands (USVI), an unincorporated territory of the United States. Located on the island is the territorial capital and port of Charlotte Amalie. As of the 2001 census, the population of Saint Thomas was 51,181[1] about 47% of the US Virgin Islands total. The district has a land area of 80.9 km² (31.24 sq mi). The shores of St. Thomas, although well developed in many areas, hold a collection of glimmering public beaches headed up by wide-open Magens Bay on the north coast. Magens continually ranks among the Caribbean's most scenic beaches and even has a nearby nature trail to explore. However, you will get some sand kicked in your face by the weekly stampede of cruise-shippers. Marriott's Frenchman's Reef and Morning Star Beach Resort, southeast of Charlotte Amalie, has a great, accessible family beach offering snorkel gear and small sailboats.
